F1 Insight Physical
Art direction and animation Damon O'Connell.
Director Kevin Chapman (ITV F1 Sport Live broadcast) asked me again to create the 2007 features for F1: Insight. Suggesting we base it on a cartoon style.
I took inspiration from Richard Linklaters -A Scanner Darkly and Anima masters
Rintaro -Metropolis, Mamoru Oshii -Ghost in the Shell, to name a few.
The Feature explains the physical challenges the F1 drivers face during a race.
Ex F1 Driver and Presenter Martin Brundle first goes through a physical work out on an exercise bike and is then spun in a G-Force Machine at high speed. These exercises are a simulation of what an F1 driver goes through during a race. The feature changes from reality to Manga and back to reality.
We decided the Manga style would be the best way of showing these invisible forces that buffit the drivers.
This was an amazing project to work on which confronted us with exciting challenges and dramatic results.
We used a spectacular fusion of CG and traditional character animation to create a stunning Manga-esque piece of Anima.
The first clip shows the entire Physical episode.
The Second clip shows just the G Force animation.
